"Modern" music without beats or music that is hard to categorize is often sexless and soulless. When composing these pieces, I am not considering genre, nor am I considering purity. Dance becomes the perfect companion of the abstract. This music alone can be overly cerebral; I wish to emphasize its visceral and physical qualities.
In March 2020, I set out to write music for the new season of "Life Below Zero" on National Geographic. While the world was crumbling all around, sequestered with my laptop and just a few pieces of recording equipment, I composed roughly 100 pieces that became my internal dialogue parallel to a rapidly changing pandemic. Turns out that writing pieces for a survivalist reality TV show proved reflective of the actual world and vice versa. Perhaps these pieces signal fear and hope, but also that we are all collectively linked not only to our own biologies and weaknesses, but all other creatures of our pale blue dot. As an artist, it is difficult to know how to respond to the suffering of the world, as it feels ineffective compared to the medical community on the frontlines or the ingenious scientists looking for a cure. I can only provide myself with a psychological musical backdrop and hopefully help even one other being through these challenging times.
